HOW DID IT ALL START?
German born, Joseph Pilates originally called his method, Contrology. Its principles incorporate Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Breath and Flow. You can do Pilates with or without equipment but no matter what, expect the moves to involve slow, precise movements and breath control. Pilates is a full-body exercise method that will help you do everything better. As I’ll be teaching mat based sessions, the mat is a tad thicker than your standard yoga mat, to cushion pressure points during exercise.
His method embraces both the total body conditioning needed for the rigours of exercise and for rehabilitating the injuries that often plague dancers, performers, and athletes, as well as taking different bodies into consideration. Therefore, the standard exercise is not always taught in the same manner each time.
The spine, for Joseph Pilates, was the key to physical fitness – and by extension, emotional and psychological wellbeing. “A man is as young as his spinal column,” he once famously said. It’s all about working smarter, not harder and precision is everything.
Although Pilates is specifically defined as an exercise for the core or abdominal muscles. It is important that you know that the core includes the entire trunk that is, the abdominals, the pelvic floor muscle, the hips, the inner and outer thighs, and the back. So expect a workout that works your entire body.
HOW CAN I HELP YOU?
I am experienced in teaching clients with lower back pain, osteoporosis, injury recovery and those needing general athletic conditioning. I also specialise in prenatal and postnatal exercises - to quote a prenatal client, "Nerine patiently taught me and guided me along throughout my second trimester. She tailored our sessions according to my capabilities and encouraged me every time I wasn’t feeling great. She really helped me get stronger and feel good about myself during my pregnancy journey. I had constant backache even before getting pregnant but it all went away after going for my private classes"
